Challenge 270 and Work on Scarves

Challenge #270

This week's challenge (here) was to use the tangle Skye created by Margaret Bremner.  I really enjoyed this one, and this one I'm sure will be better with practice.  

My first attempt from memory (after seeing the steps) was not good - the strips were not connecting properly, so I decided to give it another try.  This time I didn't do the little angled lines on the short ends, and that made it possible for me to adjust as needed to make the lines connect.  Also, I started with an "S" instead of backwards "S" so then had to start on the left instead of on the right.  All in all, it came out fairly decent, I think, but like I said I think it can really improve with practice.

Work on Scarves

I'm enjoying seeing my work on the VIDA scarves, so I have been looking at some of my work differently to see if they might look good as scarves.  Also, because the scarves are large and you need really high definition files, I have been playing around and spent many hours last weekend doing some experiments.  Ended up figuring out that it would really help if I knew Inkscape better (free vector software), so started going through some tutorials on YouTube to learn it better.

Here are some of the ones I have created recently.  I hope you enjoy them:

These first two were inspired by a carved flower on a stone wall in India (when I visited last year).  I hand carved a stamp to create the pattern and then fiddled wtih it to create the pattern in larger scale for the scarves.  Both are using the same pattern, just with different colors and scale.

These 2 are square scarves, so I used works that might not do so well as a repeating pattern.  Both were created with the same hand-carved stamp (leaves repeating pattern); the left on paper with ink, watercolors and colored pencils; the right one on fabric with inks, and acrylics.


And the last one I just added last night from an old piece, that needed a bit of work.  I used the same hand carved stamp as for the ones above and really had fun.  Can't you tell I love the moon? :)

Challenge #269, Magazine Publishing and Tessellated Fish

The Diva's challenge this week (here) was to try out the newly released tangle Ellish.  You can find the step outs for Ellish here in the Zentangle Newsletter.

You are seeing my very first attempt at this one, and for some reason I really do not like the tile, but decided to post it anyway.  This proves that sometimes you really need to practice to get something right :)

Magazine Publishing

I love Cloth Paper Scissors and have had a subscription ever since my niece gave me a 1-year subscription many years ago.  If you don't know the magazine, there is a challenge in every issue and once in a while it grabs me, and I have to participate (and hope my submission gets published).  No matter what, I always learn lots when creating my submissions, so even if they don't end up getting accepted, I had fun :) 

This one was to design and cut a stencil and submit a 6x6 in work made with the stencil.  My piece showed up in the latest magazine - May June issue, and I was thrilled to see it.  This is the piece (below) and if you have a copy, it is on page 88.

I even lost a little piece of it (top center flower)!

And here is the piece I created with the stencil, molding paste, watercolors, ink, colored pencils, acrylics, and who knows what else!

I also submitted an apron for the next issue, so we will see if that one will make it as well :).

Tessellated Fish

Escher's tessellations are incredible, I love them and find them very inspiring.  Mine are completely amateurish, but I don't care... I love creating them and it is always a huge challenge to make them fit perfectly, especially when you want to make it a repeat pattern.

My latest try was with the fish I hand-carved (here), but I wanted to make them a little rounder and lighter, so I fiddled with them, the design and size until I got to this:

After making the repeat pattern, I tried it on the VIDA scarves, and loved how they looked - actually was very surprised :)  Here is one:

Challenge 263 and The Sunny Window

Challenge #263

It's been quite a while since I have posted and participated in the challenge.  Life gets so busy at times that when you need it the most you don't even get a chance to relax and create.

This week's challenge (here) was quite fun... even though I just saw it today, I just had to do it :).  I'm not thrilled with it, but since it is the first I have created in weeks, it will have to do.  I still had fun, so that's what's important.

The Sunny Window

In our bedroom we have a wall of windows; I absolutely love them as I love light.  The only problem is that the semi-circular window lets in a lot of light as it does not have a shade. 

So, I have been thinking about what I could do to block some of the light, but not too much.  Here is my solution - window art made with used tea bags, and lightly painted with Inktense.  We will see if it will last :)  If not, then at least I loved using recycled materials.

2 layers of tea bags (one horizontal, another vertical) on top of freezer paper.  I used about 1/2 of Mod Podge mixed with 1/2 of water.

While the tea bags were drying, I drew the design on a large piece of paper.

Added the design to the tea bags.

Went over the design with 3-D paint.

And this is what it looks like at this point when you turn it towards the light.

Then I painted the different shapes in yellow, green, and blue tones of Inktense.

This is what it looks like against the dark floor...

... and here held up against the light.

Here is the window now with the sun hitting it.  The colors sort of disappear in the sun, but at night they are quite visible.  I will leave them as is for now; can always add more color later if I want :)

Of course, now I want to try small pieces, and experiment with other materials sandwiched between the teabags.  Lots of ideas, just need to find the time :)

Challenge #252 and Latest Hand-Carved Stamps

Challenge #252 - Tangle Within a Tangle

This week's challenge (here) was to create your string from a tangle, and then tangle inside it :)  How fun is that?!!

I decided I definitely was not going to look at what others did before creating my tile; I was afraid everyone was going to pick my tangle :).  I started out by going through my catalog of tangles - nothing but a bunch of step-outs in a ring binder and a bunch of 2x2 inch samples of tangles.  

I put some possibilities aside, and then went with the one I thought would be most fun.  I hope I don't go through everyone's entries and find out everyone chose Poke Root!!

Latest Hand-Carved Stamps

Here are the last hand-carved stamps from the #CarveDecember challenge.  I really appreciate everyone's nice comments about my stamps :)  

I'm going to grab a couple of these patterns and get a stencil cut from it.  I'm trying a seller on ETSY and see how it turns out.  If you know of any places that cut stencils from your art for a reasonable price, please let me know.

I love how this one turned out.  I feel it is not my usual style, but sometimes it is good to get out of your comfort zone :)

Challenge #251 and More Hand-Carved Stamps

Challenge 251 - Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day

The Diva's little boy has Moebius Syndrome and the family goes through quite a lot, especially the little guy - my heart goes out to them every time he is sick and they have to rush him to the hospital.  

This week's challenge is to use the Moebius Syndrome logo to help raise awareness for this disorder.  To find out more, please visit the Diva's post here.

More Hand-Carved Stamps

A few more stamps I designed and hand-carved in December.  I had a few days off work, so I had a bit more time - it was so much fun!

I'm still working on making this a pattern :)
Sometimes it is so off!! :)

Inspired by temple carvings in India.

Was designed as a border, but can also work as a pattern :)

I think I actually like it more as a border :)

This is a continuous stamp - I had carved a similar one but it does not make a continuous design.  I like how I can use it to catalog colors of paint / pencils; I think it would also work great for journaling.

Challenge #250 and New Hand carved Stamps

Challenge #250

The Diva's weekly challenge (here) was to go back to basics: 3.5 x 3.5 white tile, black and white, string, and pencil shading.  It is probably not that different than I usually do, but I did try to use some tangles I had not used in a while.

New Hand Carved Stamps

In December I carved a bunch of stamps to play along with Julie Fei Fan Balzer and a bunch of other people for the #CarveDecember challenge (here).  I did not carve one stamp a day (just did not have the time), but did carve as many as I had time for.  It even made me get on Instragram to share, encourage, and get encouragement :).  I had a lot of fun.

Here are all of them (bottom) and the prints on fabric above.  I will show a few at a time in the next few posts.

This is a very simple flower, sketched on paper in about 10 seconds.  It took a bit longer to carve :)

This one I carved on my wedding anniversary, so I had to go with the LOVE theme :)

This is a very simple branch, which you can print several ways to make crazy looking trees :)

Challenge #249

This is the first Diva's challenge of 2016; you can see it here.  I'm still trying to get organized after a very busy week off, so I'm only posting the challenge in this blog post and will share more next week.

I found the challenge really fun as I love both of the tangles: Auraknot and Diva Dance.  If you haven't tried them, I would recommend them - they are both easy and fun.

Here is my tile; I can't wait to see everyone else's.

Challenge # 246 and Newly Designed and Cut Stencil

Challenge # 246 - Monotangle Trees

This week's challenge was a wonderful guest post by Dilip Patel (here).  I could spend hours on this one and try all different things, but since instead of hours, I have minutes... I went with a Bijou tile (2x2 inches).

Newly Designed and Cut Stencil

I have been thinking about designing a stencil of a repeat pattern.  So, on Sunday, I went at it and this is what I came up with.  I think I will have a lot of fun with this one.

Started out with a print from a hand-carved stamp (bottom right), trying different things on graph paper, seeing what would work as a stencil, and finally drawing the piece (top left) to be copied over and over to make up the complete design.

This is what the stencil looks like after the first test (it is 4x4 inches).  It took me forever to get each of the little pieces out - apparently I didn't press hard enough with my x-acto blade.

This is what my first print looks like (using the stencil 4 times, of course).  I also outlined all the shapes with black ink, just so I could see the pattern better.

Then I started thinking what would happen if I were to go into some of those bigger white shapes and "cut out" the inside.  I haven't done it on the stencil (yet!), just wanted to see what it would be like.  So I drew the shapes, and painted then with some of the acrylic paints I had used with the stencil.  I like it, but drawing/painting them and cutting them out are 2 very different things, so I'm still thinking if I will attempt it or not.

Challenge #245 and Gel Printed and Tangled Boxes

I'm so glad to be posting again!  It means I found a bit of time to create :).  Sometimes work takes over my life, and this was one of those times - I sure hope it is over for now!

This week's challenge (here) was to go back to basics and Hollibaugh - you can see the link to the step outs in the Diva's challenge page.  I wanted to do something I had not done before, so I drew three strings and made those my intersecting lines.  I hope you like it; I obviously had fun with it :)

  

Gel printed and Tangled Boxes

I'm trying to use some of the paints and materials I've had for years, rather than keep buying new ones.  So, in an effort to use some of the acrylic paints I had, I used my small gel plate (3x5 in) and some of my stencils and had a lot of fun with a couple of boxes.  Then I started tangling on the box (as you can see I'm not finished yet).

I'm having a great time with this wonky box, and I'm starting to wonder how it would be to do it on a wooden box.  I think the surface would be a lot smoother and easier to tangle on.  I might have to try it!
